An Affordable MCM Find

How purchasing and decorating nightstands gave me nightmares and what I bought that finally put me at ease.

HOME

Decor has always been a frenemy of mine and decision paralysis often accompanies my contemplation over how a room should be decorated. When it came time to purchase nightstands I found myself researching so many options and coming back to the same styles that either didn't feel right or were too pricey. After months of searching, the pieces finally fell into place. Let's get into it:

The Details

When my husband and I were dating and we moved in together, I moved into what was his apartment with all of his things. He never limited me on redecorating but we reached a happy medium of style that has lasted to this day. That style has always been clean, masculinely feminine, and often with industrial and greenery touches throughout the space.

For the time when we lived in an apartment and smaller space, that translated into touches of black metal and green plants, and a color scheme of navy blue, gray, and medium to dark colored wood. I find this color scheme and decor palette comforting but not comforting enough to decorate our entire house this way now that we actually live in a house and not an apartment. I do find it comforting enough to decorate our bedroom with this palette in mind.

I wanted to elevate the palette a little bit so I spent a lot of time on Pinterest looking around at various ideas and how shades of blue interact with each other. I settled on more of a slate blue than a navy. Practically speaking, we have to have a dark color incorporated into our bedroom, mainly on our bedspread, because we allow our dogs in our bed. We just love them too much to say no, and therefore we must say no to any light-colored bedspreads. It's a worthy sacrifice. That dark color is currently black, but I am still mulling over a change to a different dark color or pattern. It's a work in progress!

Our bed is a MCM style king bed in a medium colored wood. It's not some ritzy vintage piece, we bought it on Wayfair, but I love it. I love the style so much, and MCM in general. So, when we were looking for new matching nightstands, I immediately gravitated towards MCM style.

I knew I was looking for MCM nightstands in a medium wood color, but I also love details. The kind of details I really love are those that are subtle and easy to clean. The details can really get carried away and just end up being dust magnets, and those are the kind of details I don't like. I ended up finding the perfect MCM nightstands with detailing on the drawer that could easily be cleaned but still gave it a certain uniqueness.

Styling the nightstand is simple, I like basically nothing on the nightstand. However, I happen to share a room with my husband and his input was considered. He asked for lamps, which, like, reasonable. So I set out to locate the perfect lamps - again the palette and mood being clean, masculinely feminine, with industrial touches. Umm, can I just say, decision paralysis definitely set in until I just gave up. But you know how when you're looking for something you don't find it, and then when you give up, you find exactly what you were looking for? Yeah, case in point here.

My mother in law redecorated her guest room and bought touch black iron lamps with a glass lampshade. We stayed over one night and I immediately told my husband that those lamps were perfect. They were sold in a set of two and under $100 so needless to say they were ordered within 24 hours.

The touch feature is a bit ... touchy (pun intended), to say the least. My daughter thinks it's hilarious but when accidentally touched in the middle of the night, it's not so funny. But, they are so perfect for our space and match our decor perfectly. It comes with a usb and usb-c plug on the side, which is an added bonus.

We've still got a long way to go in our bedroom but this setup was a step in the right direction.
